The deceased must have lived in Hidalgo County at the time of death and cannot have life insurance, a prepaid funeral plan, or other benefits that cover funeral costs. Prepaying the funeral home disqualifies the application, and expenses already paid cannot be reimbursed.

Basic burial or direct cremation, a simple casket or cremation container, two hours of viewing or funeral services for burials (weekdays 8am to 5pm), and transportation of remains within Hidalgo County. No reimbursement for expenses already paid.

Certified copies come from the Texas Department of State Health Services, Vital Statistics Section (official site). Order online, by mail, or through the local county clerk where the death occurred. Most families need about 10 certified copies. Check the DSHS site for current fees.

Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or visit a local office. You must apply within 2 years of the death. The funeral home often reports the death to SSA, but the survivor must apply for the payment.
