When they answer, say: "I need to apply for burial assistance for a family member." It is okay if you do not have documents ready. They will tell you what to bring.
Step 1 of 5 · If money is tight
Do not sign anything with a funeral home before you call. In many counties, signing first disqualifies the family.
Camden County program
Read this before you call
The family or funeral home must notify the county agency before the services take place, or the claim may be denied unless there is good cause.

Official program pageThe county social services agency may pay toward funeral and burial costs for a person who was receiving Work First NJ cash assistance, SSI or Medicaid at death, or who had applied and could be found eligible. The payment is not automatic. It adds to the resources of the deceased and the family.
Time matters here: The funeral director files the claim within 30 days after the burial or cremation.
What it pays, what you pay
Up to $3,056 for funeral services and up to $714 for cemetery costs for a person age 2 or older, or the amount charged if less (state rule as of 2024).
| Assets | The value of any prepaid funeral contract reduces the allowance dollar for dollar. Contributions from family and others up to $1,570 for an adult are not counted, and amounts above that reduce the county payment. |
|---|---|
| Residency | For SSI recipients, the county where the person last lived is responsible. |
Funeral services and cemetery costs are paid separately. Cremation is allowed: an urn is charged to the funeral allowance, and crematory charges and burial of the urn are charged to the cemetery allowance.
Call the Camden County Board of Social Services at 856-225-8800 before arranging the funeral and ask about a funeral and burial claim. The funeral director files a petition (Form WFNJ-11M) and the cemetery or crematory files Form WFNJ-11C.
Typical timeline: The state rule says the agency pays within 30 calendar days after the amount is decided.

Where copies come from
Certified copies come from the New Jersey Department of Health, Office of Vital Statistics and Registry (official site). The first certified copy costs $25 and includes the search, then each additional copy ordered at the same time is only $2. Order all the copies you need in one go and you will save a great deal. Online orders go through VitalChek and take 6 to 8 weeks, so if you need copies sooner ask your local registrar in the municipality where the death occurred. You must prove your relationship to the person who died and show acceptable ID. Mail payments go to Treasurer, State of New Jersey, by check or money order, never cash.
Order about 10 certified copies. Banks, insurers, Social Security, vehicles, and property will each want one.
Know your rights
Federal law (the FTC Funeral Rule) protects you. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

Questions families ask
Camden County's assistance program (Funeral and Burial Expense Payment (Work First New Jersey rules)) can cover a basic burial or cremation for families who qualify. Call 856-225-8800 before signing anything with a funeral home.
Yes. An eligible surviving spouse or child can claim a one-time $255 lump-sum death payment by calling 1-800-772-1213, and monthly survivor benefits are often available too.
Veterans may qualify for free burial in a national or state veterans cemetery plus a VA burial allowance, which can matter more than any county program. See our Camden County veteran page for details.
Most families need about 10 certified copies for banks, insurance, and property. In New Jersey, order through the funeral home or the state vital records office.
A traditional funeral with burial commonly runs $7,000 to $12,000. Direct cremation is usually the lowest-cost professional option, often $700 to $2,000, and prices vary widely between providers in the same area, so it pays to call two or three. Every funeral home must give you prices over the phone under the FTC Funeral Rule.
No, and this surprises almost everyone: a power of attorney ends the moment the person dies. After death, authority passes to the executor named in the will, or to a court-appointed administrator when there is no will. Funeral decisions belong to the next of kin in the order set by state law, usually spouse first, then adult children, then parents, then siblings.
For after-death decisions, no. Power of attorney only matters while someone is alive. The next of kin can make funeral decisions right away, and the estate is handled through the will or, without one, through the state's simple next-of-kin rules. See our guide on what happens when there is no will.

The Social Security $255 payment
Who can claim it
A surviving spouse who was living with the person who died, or a spouse or child eligible for benefits on the deceased person's record.
Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or visit a local office. You must apply within 2 years of the death. The funeral home often reports the death to SSA, but the survivor must apply for the payment.
